Roosevelt County
Roosevelt County Montana is where the murder of Kim Nees occurred. However, they have secondary Jurisdiction to the FBI because of it also being an Indian Reservation. In March of 1980, then Sheriff Dean Mahlum (despite evidence to the contrary) wrote a letter to the FBI stating that Barry Beach was the main suspect. Barry not being an enrolled member of the Fort Peck Tribe, the FBI relinquished jurisdiction of the investigation to the Roosevelt County Sheriffs Office. It was three and one half years later that Barry Beach was arrested in Monroe Louisiana, and gave a false confession to the Louisiana authorities. This confession was under duress, without an attorney, and during the investigation of an organized Louisiana Homicide Task Force!
